Dear Mother,

Today is your Birthday and now I am allowed to tell you where I am. The city is perfectly beautiful, in spite of having been taken over from the Germans so recently. I feel certain that later when more places are open and more people return, we will be able to see a little of how it was before the War.

There is a different feeling here. We have always heard how unlike the English, the French were, so to move from London to Paris I can see the contrast. I liked London very much and I am sure I’ll like Paris, too.

There are still signs of Paris having been a recently occupied city. Food is still quite scarce. We are fed in civilian restaurants taken over by the Army. We have a very few fresh vegetables or fruit, but the rest of the food is good. But as far as civilian restaurants, they just aren’t. Maybe later I’ll have an opportunity to have some real French Onion soup for instance.

We are well taken care of, for our Hotel has lights and we actually had hot water a week ago. Let me tell you, that is a luxury. The city is still strange but the main spots are beginning to look familiar. Several days ago, Lee and I climbed to the first level of the Eiffel Tower over 300 steps! But the view was superb. Maybe someday, I’ll be able to see Paris from the very top of the Tower.

Our mail is still delayed. I just received the V-Mail Emma wrote me August 9. But soon I hear it will be straightened out and I hope to get stacks of mail. I am really looking forward to the sweater Emma sent.

A very Happy Birthday Momma, even though it will reach you late. I hope to see you on the next one.

Much love,

Big Sis
