Perfume

Perfume

After the stores returned to normal, for war time, we became aware of “Parfum”. This was Paris, there were no beautiful clothes, but there were still bottles of French perfume. The GIs soon became at home in the world of fragrances – Chanel No. 5, Guerlain, Worth, Lancome and my favorite Jean Patou.

We were given to understand that a scent could only be judged by smelling it on the skin, not sniffing from the bottle. Skin chemically changed the scent. Bunce arrived in my Drafting Room one day saying “I have Chanel No. 5 on my left wrist, Guerlain “Le Blue Huere” on my right wrist, Lucien Le Long behind one ear, Jean Patou behind the other ear and various other lovely odors on my elbows and perhaps my heel!” The WACs may have been clothed in Olive Drab, but they wore very expensive perfume.
