Rural Healthcare Support
By Matthew Pearson, PhD | January 28, 2026
Last week I received notification of another rural hospital with plans to close. If the trend of the last several years holds, without help, more hospitals and clinics will fail.
Across the U.S., rural healthcare is in crisis: decades-long financial strain, staffing shortages, and low reimbursement rates have forced dozens of small hospitals and clinics to shrink services or shut their doors entirely. Since 2020 alone, a significant number of rural hospitals have closed or converted to outpatient-only models, with essential services like labor & delivery and chemotherapy disappearing from many communities and hundreds more facilities at ongoing risk of closure due to operating losses. Rural residents are now driving hours for basic care, widening health disparities and economic decline.
At Pearson Innovation, we help communities navigate these challenges by strengthening healthcare infrastructure, maximizing funding opportunities, and designing sustainable care systems tailored to local needs. Through strategic planning, partnership building, and resource optimization, we empower rural leaders to protect access, stabilize critical clinics, and build resilient health ecosystems that keep care close to home. We want to be your partner for rural healthcare renewal.
Rural healthcare doesn’t have to disappear. With the right strategy, partnerships, and resources, communities can adapt and thrive.
